Composition and performance – Blurring borders

This session was moderated by Frans de Ruiter who introduced the the topic by sharing his own experiences as Professor in the Academy for Creative and Performing Arts at Leiden University (NL).

The first presentation was given by Marje Loharu, who explained the idea behind the joint study platform including a new master's programme called Master in Contemporary Performance and Composition (CoPeCo), which is offered in cooperation between four universities across Europe. CoPeCo aims to focus on modern teaching of contemporary music and to unite national expertise and competence to create an innovative high-level and broad-based joint curriculum.

Adding to this introduction of innovative collaboration for a more efficient study, Elo Masing emphasised the importance of cooperation and improvisation at work and whilst studying.

Juan Parra Cancino spoke about computer music practise as musical activity that demands the fusion of the roles of composer, performer and instrumental designer. A central theme he discussed with the audience were the possibilities and limitations of electronically way produced music, while looking at the characteristic of being infinitely precise. Furthermore the presentation included a practical implementation of the KVSwalk programme, which enables multi-layered composition, that aimed to explore the possibilities and limitations of physicality and embodied musicality in computer music performance.

The session was closed by a round table discussion, where the chairs of the collaborating universities of the CoPeCo together with the session’s speakers discussed with each other and responded to audience’s questions and suggestions. During this debate useful ideas in support for the CoPeCo were developed, such as how to tackle broader topics such as “commercial viability” of contemporary music today.

Participants of the discussion round were Taavi Kerkimäe and Helena Tulve from the Estonian Academy for Music and Theatre while Frederik Schwenk represented the Bilateral Academy for Contemporary Music Hamburg/Lyon.
